This compilation is more than just music. It is a mission statement. As you will see on the website, there is a written mission statement for the label. While those words are an adequate description for what I intend the focus of Free Floating Music to be, words can only express so much. This is, of course, why there is music. And while this music doesn’t speak loudly, it does speak clearly. It speaks to us of the spaces where we can be free from the accelerated pull of the world. It writes...

I don’t know if there’s something in the water in Manchester or if his house is built above some sacred tomb of Arthurian knights, but I know that Brin Coleman (aka Bing Satellites) possesses some incredible source of musical power that goes beyond what I’m accustomed to. As I have been listening repeatedly to Twilight Sessions Volume Eight, I find it amazing that seven other volumes (totaling over 15 hours of music) have been released by Bing Satellites in little over a year. And this...

For me this release by Mirada is a lesson in listening. In my initial listening to the work after I received it, I didn't really know what was going on in the pieces.  There seemed to me to be little to no movement.  I found them moderately interesting as atmospheres, but wasn't entirely moved by them. For a (brief) while I considered passing on releasing them through Free Floating.  I thought about sending Mark (Heath, AKA Mirada) to submit the work to the Complex Silence series or some...

The Sutra of the Heart of the Lady Perfection of Wisdom Thus have I heard. At one time Lord Buddha was staying at Vulture Peak Mountain in Rajagriha, with a great gathering of the monastic sangha and the bodhisattva sangha. At the same time, noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva mahasattva, was looking right at the experience of the profound perfection of wisdom and he saw the five groups to be empty of nature. Then, through the power of the Buddha, venerable Shariputra said to noble...

I don’t know what to say about Bing Satellites that I didn’t already say in the notes for the last album of his that I released. So I’ll keep it short and to the point….  It should be clear to all by now that I am a big fan of Bing Satellites (as well as the other moniker’s of the man behind the music, Brin Coleman). He is obviously adept at creating scintillating atmospheres of effortless simplicity that, at the same time, reveal even more beauty in their shimmering depths.  I am,...

There are several reasons why I am especially glad to be releasing Tange's I Will Tell The Audient Void on Free Floating.  First is that Gordie (AKA Gordon MacMillan AKA Tange) is just a really nice guy. I only really know him through the digital realm; having chatted in the Stillstream chatroom, interacted occasionally on Facebook, and exchanged emails. But each time I have come away with an impression of Gordie as a just a really straightforwardly good guy.  Second is that I now have an...

The music of Seconds Before Awakening (the nom de disque of one Michael S. Waller) is tied up with the history of Free Floating right from the very beginning….  Way back in July of 2008 I played “Zero 2” on the very first installment of my Stillstream radio show. Since then the music of Seconds Before Awakening has graced the show quite a few times and now I am happy to be releasing new music under the Free Floating banner. There are many aspects of the music that reach out to me. There...

This release almost didn’t happen (though, thankfully for all of us, it obviously has…).  Jack Hertz sent me these tracks back at the beginning of December 2011. I promptly entered them into my regular rotation of new music and gave them lots of thorough listening. When new music is submitted to Free Floating I try to listen to it in as many ways as possible—doing work at the computer, while reading, in headphones as I go to sleep…. I want to experience the music fully.  As I listened...

Like many artists, I first encountered daniel in the Stillstream chat room and then, I believe, through the Relaxed Machinery community. It was on the latter where he posted a SoundCloud link to “Being Peace”. Here is what he had to say about it:  I recorded this piece, "Being Peace" about 10 years ago, and I have never come close to its perfection since…. During that day that ended with Being Peace, I was for some reason unentangled with the result, which mental state I was...

I will somewhat sheepishly admit that I almost passed on releasing this latest installment in Bing Satellites’ Twilight Sessions series. I’m not sure what I didn’t hear when I listened to these pieces the first time. And let’s be clear, it wasn’t that I didn’t like them, but for some reason I didn’t think they would be right for Free Floating. I think that I initially got caught in the piano focus of the opening track and the idea of this collection as “piano-based” got stuck...

I feel privileged that Free Floating debuted the work of daniel robert lahey, both with his track “Being Peace” on the Conception compilation and his first album, “breathing may surprise”. Daniel has such a wonderfully nuanced sense of composition and a well developed ear for harmony. Those abilities are on display in this his second Free Floating release. I could attempt to wax prosaic and throw around a lot of superlatives here, but having just celebrated the 100th birthday of John...

Beautiful. The term has lost much of its meaning, being used so often in common speech and advertising hyperbole that it almost passes us by when we hear it. Yet beauty is really at the heart of Free Floating and is expressed consistently throughout this new work by Silvercord. When something is beautiful it affects us on different levels. At the surface there is something pleasing to the senses, something that draws us in and holds us in a place of simple appreciation. These pieces do that....

Time is a precious commodity. In this hyper connected and information soaked world, a bit of time away from the buzz of the world can be just what the mind and soul need in order to recharge and find our way. With “Red Veil” Gregg Plummer gives us the gift of time. Oh, sure, you can listen to this music while tweeting, posting, commenting and sharing (truth be told, I did all of that while preparing this for release). But the gentle harmonious drones and luxuriating pads call you away from...

I love the music that I release on Free Floating. While that may seem a banal statement, I feel that it’s important to put it out there. As the label has grown and I have clarified and developed my approach to the music that is submitted to Free Floating, I have come to feel more strongly the importance of my loving the music. While I can apply various aesthetic criteria to works that I am evaluating for release, much of the final decision comes down to how I feel about the music and how it...

I think that part of what makes Jack Hertz stand out as an ambient artist is his passionate attachment to the natural world and his interest in expressing that passion through his music.  Whether he’s inspired by starfish, wetlands, trees, oceans, or microflora, his art is informed by his experiences and love of the world around him. And he is usually one to put his money where his mouth is, releasing music through his Sound4Good label which donates proceeds to appropriate charities.  This...

If there is a core, an artistic and emotional center to the music released by Free Floating, then Daniel Robert Lahey’s music is there. I consider his music (breathing may surprise, tonalchemy and now gravity’s kiss) to be the prototypical examples of what I think Free Floating music is.  Daniel’s music creates this aural space that is lush and deep, yet very simple and immediate at the same time. There is real depth to his knowledge of traditional musical structures, yet he is wise...

The four pieces of The Sidereal Cycle were released on each equinox and solstice from June 2012 through March 2013. This release collects each of those four pieces in one place and includes extended liner notes. NOTE: This release contains the same music as the four original releases. If you have those then you don't need to download this collection. The extended liner notes are available at  freefloatingmusic.com . ========== The Sidereal Cycle is a four-part suite of long-form ambient works...

I am drawn to the intimacy implicit in this collection by Magnetic Wind. The titles (and indeed the inspiration noted by the artist) inform us that this music explores the desire for closeness and relationship. These are, in essense, ambient love songs; I Want to Hold Your Hand via Brian Eno, if you will. Of course this music is really more mature in its approach to love than the adolescent angst of the early Beatles. Perhaps its more akin to an ambient take on George Harrison's Something from...

Here's something I wrote in 2010 regarding the original release of Strange Skies:  Back when I was doing my radio show on Stillstream, I was dedicated to finding as much new music as I could, so I would find and listen to a lot of music. Some was good, some was fair, some was awful. But then there were some albums that I would keep coming back to. Even as new music appeared for me to play, I would be drawn to certain releases that just rose above the rest.  To me, Strange Skies is one of...

I never met Lucette. I never spoke with her. Yet I feel that I truly know her mind and her heart. While she was alive she poured herself into her art, both sonic and visual. I don't know of anyone who has heard Lucette's music who has not been deeply moved by it. The depth of her artistry has been heralded by many, and for good reason. Over the course of over 23 albums worth of music, Lucette's sonic palette creates a rich and diverse world of aural stories and immersive atmospheres. The sounds...

Simon Slator was there at the beginning, back when I first became interested in free ambient music on the web. I'm not sure exactly when I discovered his music, but I know that several of his releases (notably Skylight, 6AM, and Four Patterns) became staples of my ambient music library. I spent many hours in those days trolling websites to find the kind of ambient music that I loved most--gently drifting pads of subtly shifting tones, very minimal and harmonious. I would download almost...

I have in my mind's eye an image of the web page where I first discovered Padmospheres. I can see the original cover as a relatively small thumbnail on a black background. The page border seems to be some sort of pattern of swirling oranges and purples and pinks. At least that's what my (admittedly poor) memory shows me when I think back.... However, that page no longer seems to exist, or my search skills have been unable to retrieve it. But the music is still with me and it's an album that I...

It feels like bringing my children back home... When I started Free Floating I hesitated to release my own music through the label. Part of me felt that it was presumptuous to put my music next to that of artists whose music I consider some of the best in the world. But time, and great encouragement from some of those same artists, has softened my views on this. As part of this year I call "In Hindsight", I felt it made sense to bring my own works into the fold of Free Floating and...

How do I begin to put into words my thoughts and feelings regarding Structures From Silence? For me, Structures From Silence is like food, or water, or clothing. It is not music in the traditional sense. It is a place for the mind, body, and spirit to inhabit. It has surrounded and nourished me through almost every aspect of my life; every emotion, every major event, every mundane task. It has been my reading companion, my nursemaid, my co-worker, my therapist. My quiet friend. In 1984 I was 19...

Form in Void The tree is stripped, All color, fragrance gone, Yet already on the bough, Uncaring spring! --Ikkyū In the notes for the first release in this series, Contemplation 1, I didn't say anything about Michael Meara's music, including instead an extended Zen quotation. I felt this was in the spirit of the music itself and the concepts of 'form' and 'void' from which it drew inspiration. I was tempted to do the same this time around, but on further reflection (or 'contemplation') I...

‘Conception’ was a beginning. ‘Reflection’ is looking forward and looking back at the same time. It is fitting that the first new music in years to be released under the Free Floating banner should come from Brin Coleman. After all, it was his release (under one of his many other performing monikers, Bing Satellites) which was the first non-compilation release from the label. My admiration for Brin’s music goes back a long way, back to before Free Floating was a radio show or a record label. Early on it was just a blog of mine that featured ambient music that was available for free...

For Scott’s previous release on Free Floating, 2013’s Seeking Rest, I commented on Scott’s profligacy. Back then he already had a broad discography. Since then, you will find, his oeuvre has continued to grow (as you can see HERE). In fact, this collection was intended somewhat as a retrospective and, in fact, the title “Best of…” was even suggested. As Scott and I went back and forth it turned into a bit of something else. While there is some looking back to the past represented...

My goal with Free Floating is to present music that makes us stop and listen more closely to the amazing world all around us and appreciate what we have and who we know.
